Richard’s Bio

Richard Sherman is a professional wildcat cartridge designer and the Owner and Founder of Sherman Wildcats. He grew up as an avid hunter and outdoorsman in the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and was a forester by profession.

In 2000 a thought came to him while elk hunting, perched 90 feet up in a giant spruce, “since I’m shooting a wildcat, why not improve on the one I’m shooting?” He returned home from the successful hunt and got straight to work. In his words, “I was on the verge of building a 6.5 Gibbs, but when I looked at the case, I didn’t like the very short neck, so the wheels began to spin! Why not combine the design of the A.I. with the capacity of the Gibbs? In order to do that, I would have to have a longer case to work with to gain capacity and still maintain a long neck. I would have to increase the case capacity through modification of the body. I chose the 270W case because it was . 046” longer than the ’06 case. I blew more taper out of the case than the Ackley design, maintained the 40-degree shoulder but moved it forward of the A.I. and still maintained a .300” neck. BINGO, the first Sherman was up and running with the A.I. attributes on steroids, and the exact capacity as the Gibbs.” Richards Sherman founded Sherman Wildcats shortly thereafter and continued to make modifications and improvements to his original design.

Today, Sherman Wildcats is a growing company that is in the business of making the old stigma about wildcats a thing of the past! They currently offer (6) family groups of chamberings in nearly 30 offerings from 6 mm to 375. In addition, they provide reamers and dies of which many are offered with head-stamped brass.
